We are proud to announce the launch of the TRIO-VI Centre of Excellence - a groundbreaking initiative dedicated to advancing excellence in vision research and innovation. This ambitious project, led by the ICTER Centre at Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in collaboration with University College London (Institute of Ophthalmology) and Institut de la Vision at Sorbonne Université, aims to revolutionize ophthalmic diagnostics and treatments while enhancing patient care worldwide.
Kick-Off Meeting
On February 18, 2025, ICTER hosted the Internal Kick-Off Meeting with key project beneficiaries, a representative from the European Commission, and the Director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS. The meeting focused on project objectives, funding strategies, and collaboration opportunities, concluding with a tour of our state-of-the-art research laboratories.
This meeting was followed by the United in Excellence event on February 19, 2025, at the Copernicus Science Centre - an official inauguration that brought together the scientific community, policymakers, and industry leaders to celebrate the start of this transformative initiative.
About the TRIO-VI Centre of Excellence
Eye diseases pose an increasing global health challenge, impacting millions of people and generating significant socio-economic burdens. TRIO-VI CoE aims to set new standards in ophthalmic research by pioneering cutting-edge technologies and therapies.
Key Research Areas:
A Step Towards a Brighter Future
Under the leadership of Prof. Maciej Wojtkowski, PhD, an esteemed scientist and the inventor of the first clinical prototype for SdOCT eye imaging, ICTER CoE is poised to unlock new frontiers in translational medicine. By bridging fundamental research with practical applications, we strive to accelerate innovation in eye health, foster international collaboration, and strengthen Poland’s position in global vision science.
Strategic Outlook: The Role of Vision Research in European Scientific Leadership
As TRIO-VI CoE takes shape, the Director of IChF Dr. hab. Adam Kubas, who represented the Institute at the Kick-Off Meeting, emphasized the strategic importance of the initiative in reinforcing Poland’s role in European research and innovation:
“The TRIO-VI Centre of Excellence is not just an investment in vision science—it is an investment in the future of European healthcare and technological leadership. By bringing together top-tier research institutions, we are establishing a dynamic ecosystem where fundamental discoveries seamlessly translate into real-world applications. This initiative underscores the role of international collaboration in tackling global health challenges while strengthening Europe’s position at the forefront of medical innovation. At ICHF, we recognize that the long-term impact of TRIO-VI extends beyond ophthalmology—it is about building a sustainable framework for scientific excellence, fostering talent, and creating solutions that will define the next generation of patient care.”
Project Funding & Support
TRIO-VI CoE is funded under the European Commission’s Teaming for Excellence program (Grant No. 101136570), in amount €15 million with additional support from:
- Foundation for Polish Science (MAB FENG Program) – €8 million
- Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education – €7 million
With this strong financial foundation, ICTER CoE will drive scientific breakthroughs, commercial innovation, and positive societal impact—helping shape the future of ophthalmology in Europe and beyond.
At IChF, we believe that science knows no boundaries—neither between disciplines nor those set by existing knowledge. "From dreams to solutions: we advance chemistry across borders" is the motto that guides our research, now also finding its expression in vision science.
