Dzięki wykładom z serii DCL, naukowcy z IChF PAN mogą zapoznać się z badaniami prowadzonymi przez obiecujących badaczy z zagranicy na wczesnym etapie kariery naukowej. Wielu z prezentujących to finaliści konkursu DCA. Rozszerzeniem serii DCL jest DCL: Mentors. Wykłady z tej serii przygotowywane są przez doświadczonych naukowców, liderów w swoich dziedzinach. Celem DCL: Mentors jest zainspirowanie kolejnej generacji naukowców.

- Abstrakt:
The question about the uniqueness of RNA and DNA and the reasons for their selection as the only informational polymers in biology is one of the most fascinating problems for contemporary science. Despite years of experimental efforts, the first selective pathways to RNA/DNA nucleotides under prebiotic conditions were shown only recently [1,2]. However, it is still unclear why nature selected only a limited set of nucleobases and (deoxy)ribose as the primary components of nucleic acids and how these informational polymers could have undergone self-replication. In this talk, I will demonstrate how modern methods of computational chemistry can be used to explain the origins of RNA and DNA on Earth and guide futher experimental efforts. In particular, I will show how chemical selectivity could be shaped by UV irradiation in early prebiotic environments. I will also demonstrate how quantum chemical simulations can be used to enhance charge transfer through the DNA double helix with simple modifications of nucleobases [3,4].

Light is ubiquitous and light-driven processes are key, e.g., to the perception of the environment by vision and photosynthesis. Furthermore, light-responsive molecules and materials play a quintessential role in addressing central socio-economic challenges, e.g., transforming our economy towards renewable energies or developing therapeutic approaches to treat cancer. Consequently, research on light-activated molecules and materials, i.e., synthesis as well as functional and mechanistic studies on such systems are intensively researched.
This talk will focus on light-driven molecular reactivity of molecules in complex environments, focusing on the excited-state dynamics in molecular intermediates in photocathodes for light-driven hydrogen evolution, in complex electron transfer cascades and photo-activated drugs for cancer therapy. I will discuss our experimental approaches, e.g., combining electrochemistry with ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy, to investigate the light driven molecular reactivity from new viewpoints and highlight implications for photocatalysis and photodrug design obtained from the spectroscopic-mechanistic studies.

In the past few years, organocatalysis have become a promising strategy to promote chemical reactions. However, the design of more efficient catalysts is of continuous demand. Aiming at solving some of the current reactivity and stability limitations of organocatalytic systems, our group is devoted to the design of innovative non-covalent and photoredox active structures for the development of robust metal-free synthetic methodologies. In this regard, we have recently introduced helical chiral triazoles as versatile multidentate H-donor structures that allow for challenging enantioselective transformations in anion-binding catalysis.[1,2] Their cooperative multidentate character permits the use of very low loadings (down to 0.05 mol%), while promoting an efficient transfer of chirality from the chiral contact ion-pair formed upon binding of the catalyst to a simple achiral anion to the final product. Herein, the remarkable performance of H-donor chiral triazole foldamers in the nucleophilic dearomatization of N- and O-heteroarenes (up to 99:1 e.r.) will be presented.[2,3]
Another line of research in our group deals with the design of novel acridinium salts for their application in photoredox-catalysis.[4] Hence, the synthesis, photophysical properties and application of tunable amide-acridinium structures with enhanced photoredox catalytic activity respect to the well-established C9-mesityl acridinium salts will also be discussed.[5]

- Abstrakt:
The search for new families of materials to fulfil the wide range of requirements for energy storage in a sustainable energy system is of great importance. Inorganic imides and amides have been under-explored as functional materials aside from interest in the hydrogen storage properties of the lithium amide-lithium hydride composite. However, these materials display promising performance as catalysts for the synthesis and decomposition of ammonia. These reactions are gaining increasing interest in the context of the storage and export of large quantities of renewable energy via the electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen. Lithium imide-based materials show very promising ammonia synthesis and decomposition activity to rival that of ruthenium. The bulk variation in composition of the materials under active conditions, revealed by in situ diffraction analysis, appears to be a key aspect of their function.

Molecular photomagnets[1] can be designed and prepared via a bottom-up modular approach using low-energy preparation methods developed by coordination, organometallic or supramolecular chemistry, and crystal engineering with the support from physical and computational sciences. They belong to the class of molecule-based materials that become paramagnetic, ferromagnetic or simply change their magnetic properties upon illumination[2] - a feature hardly accessible in conventional solids - metal alloys and oxides.
Currently known photomagnetic compounds are merely laboratory curiosities due to the low operation temperatures below the boiling point of nitrogen in most cases[3]. Hence, the major goal of this field of research is the discovery of new strategies for room temperature (RT) photomagnets that would show light-induced ON/OFF ferromagnetic switching under normal conditions.

- Abstrakt:
Chiral electrochemistry, including enantioselective electroanalysis and enantioselective electrosynthesis, is a quite explored area of research, but with a huge applicative potential yet to be studied.
Considering that chirality makes electrochemical processes smarter and applicable to issues of much higher added value we focused our attention on the characterization of new classes of inherently chiral materials. Inherent chirality is an intrinsic property of a molecule, propagating in the 2D and 3D space, which provides specific characteristics to the resulting material, obtained after depositing it on an electrode surface or after adding it as a chiral additive in a solution. Employing such molecules in enantioselective analysis, we have obtained for the first time a separation between the enantiomers of chiral probes (even drugs in complex matrix) in terms of peak potential values, testing racemic mixtures of the enantiomers of chiral drugs, and evaluating the enantiomeric excesses [1]. Starting from this point, by the optimization of the experimental conditions, several inherently chiral compounds with chemically different atropoisomeric scaffold and stereogenic elements, were synthetized and characterized, in order to be exploited in different fields (i.e. chiral electroanalysis, spintronics). Recently, the attractive and far unexplored potentialities of these systems, were also exploited in the field of bipolar electrochemistry, allowing to correlate a dynamic macro and microscopic event with the concentration of the enantiomers present in solution [2-5]. The efficient combination of the two approaches, the molecular static event with the macroscopic dynamic one, allowed me to be awarded with the prestigious ERC StG with the acronym “CHEIR”, a project funded by European Committee for five years. The global aim of such project is to achieve with unprecedented efficiency the propagation of chiral information along different length scales, based on the synergy of well-chosen molecular ingredients and physicochemical engineering. Such ambitious aim will be realized developing cargo-towing (synthetic) electro-pumps based on chiral conducting polymers for targeted drug-delivery applications.

Diseases such as cancer, diabetes or viral and bacterial infections are one of the main causes of human mortality, regardless of age and origin. Perfect methods of treatment have still not been found. Much hope is placed on research into the origin of a disease, usually involving tens or hundreds of biological macromolecules called enzymes. From this point of view, one of the most important groups of enzymes are proteases, the increased or decreased level of which allows for rapid clinical diagnosis using specific markers, and also gives the opportunity for rational, rapid research on drug discovery based on protease activity. An excellent reason for research on proteases are commercially available anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and anti-viral HIV drugs that rely on the inhibition of protease activity. Unfortunately, these drugs can only be used for a limited number of diseases, and many other proteases (around 650 proteases have been described in humans to date) involved in various disorders in humans and other living organisms require further research.
Proteases are key players in the development of viral diseases. Recent studies show that proteases operate in a network that involves the activity of many different proteolytic enzymes at the same time. Given the fact that more and more proteases are actively involved in viral diseases, there is an urgent need to develop new chemical tools that, thanks to the activity of enzymes, can be used for their precise monitoring or the search for drug candidates. Moreover, in order to detect the active form of the protease, one should use chemical tools called activity-based probes. The lecture will present modern techniques of creating tools for the study of viral proteases.

- Abstrakt:
The discovery of electroluminescence of organic molecules is one of the ground-breaking and promising breakthroughs in the last century. Owing to it and to the progress in the field of organic electronics over the last half-century, nowadays, we are surrounded by organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) products. In addition to lightness, flexibility, and low production cost, the major advantage of using organic emitters for OLEDs is the possibility to tailor their properties by designing and modifying their molecular structures. From the viewpoint of emission mechanisms, there are two types of emitters: fluorescence and phosphorescence emitters. Fluorescence emitters are the first generation of electroluminescence emitters for OLEDs, but they are fatally restricted by the upper limit of internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 25%, due to spin-statistics. The second-generation emitter, phosphorescence emitters, are more efficient and for this reason, are commonly used in OLED-based displays. However, nothing is perfect: phosphorescence emitters that are currently used in organic electronics are organometallic complexes comprising of very expensive and rare heavy metals such as Ir and Pt. To overcome this problem, the search for all-organic TADF (Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence) emitters is conducted.
Herein I present a new approach to the design of metal-free organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters for organic light-emitting diodes. I present different aspects of modification of molecule structure in order to increase efficiency. Even by simple electrochemical modification, it’s possible to change the energy levels in order to decrease the singlet-triplet energy gap. The subtle tunning of the energy difference between the singlet and triplet excited states allows for tailored emission properties of thermally activated delayed fluorescence and its efficiency. Finally, depending on the molecule and its host environment interaction, we may change the emission and increase efficiency. All presented steps will give an insight into broad possibilities of tailoring OLED emitters.

Engineering biology holds tremendous potential to revolutionize several applications from environment, to energy, to health. Living cells can be equipped with gene-based circuits that accomplish a variety of functions, theoretically allowing us to program cells with de novo capabilities such as sensing environmental chemicals, releasing drugs, or producing materials, and artificially regulating endogenous molecules that dictate cell phenotype. A major challenge today, is the intricate dependence of genetic circuits’ functions on extra and intra-cellular context. For example, although we wish that the genetic circuits keep their functionality independent of whether we include other components in the cell, this is rarely the case. This issue complicates design and is a formidable obstacle to the practical use of engineered cells. In this talk, I will review some causes of context dependence, drawing examples from both bacterial and mammalian cells, and will introduce one approach based on control theory to mitigate it. I will conclude the talk with an overview of the limitations of current approaches and of unmet needs, which require more research.

From DIY use by hobbyists to industrial manufacturing, 3D printing is setting a milestone in bringing new industrial revolution to reality. The technologies advance quickly with faster print rates, broader choice of materials and a constantly increasing accuracy and printing resolution. Impressively, state-of-the-art techniques take the printed feature sizes to the extreme: multiphoton optical stereolithography and focused electron or ion beams are now capable to produce objects with nanoscale resolution. Although at the cutting edge to printing finest details, these advanced manufacturing methods lack the capacity to process dense and pure electrical conductors – materials very much needed to push the limits of the technologies of the future. Microelectronics, nanooptics, microrobotics and energy storage are only a few examples of application areas where 3D printing of conductive metals can make a revolution. And it seems that modern chemistry (and electrochemistry in particular) can make this possible. In this lecture we are going to take a look on electrochemical technologies that allow 3D printing of metal objects with micro- and nanoscale dimensions, will see the latest achievements and discuss the future challenges in this exciting emerging technological and research field.

- Abstrakt:
Conjugated zwitterions and biradicals are well-known as transient intermediates in photochemistry. Such molecules are also found in interstellar space and in molecular clouds. Indeed, these seemingly different classes of molecules share related electronic structures. Yet, little is known about how to render them stable under ambient conditions and how to harness their peculiar properties for specific applications.
In this talk I will present on how to use carbenes as ligands to stabilize zwitterionic metal complexes, namely nitrene and imido complexes of the late transition metals. I will then show how these strongly polarized compounds are of use for the activation of strong bonds in catalysis and functional group transfer. Complementary, I will illustrate how carbenes tame biradicals and tailor their excited energy landscape. Thus, we have explored carbene control to engineer molecules for application as singlet-fission- and two-photon absorption materials.

- Abstrakt:
Chemical catalysis is key for sustainable development, by enabling cleaner technologies, improving the material- and energy-efficiency of chemical processes, and facilitating the valorization of renewable resources. Here I will discuss our research in the field of chemical catalysis driven by these motivations. Our research is pillared on three distinct but intertwined strategies, including the catalyst development by improving mechanistic understanding of the catalytic reactions, the development of new reactions by mechanistic design, and the development of (complex) transformations by relay multicatalysis. Each strategy will be portrayed with selected recent examples along with our current efforts.
